IAMTN at 20: A Global Force for Financial Inclusion and Innovation in Cross-Border Payments

More than two decades ago, Veronica Studsgaard found herself navigating the complexities of a new business in an unfamiliar industry. With limited access to peers and no clear platform for collaboration, she recognised a critical gap in the cross-border payments sector. Determined to create a space for knowledge exchange, partnership and innovation, Veronica founded the International Association of Money Transfer Networks (IAMTN) in 2005. What began as a bold vision has since grown into the leading global platform for the cross-border payments and remittance industry. Today, IAMTN connects private-sector innovators, regulators, policymakers, and development organisations to drive impactful solutions that empower millions of individuals and businesses around the world.

A Mission Rooted in Purpose

Veronica’s leadership has been defined by her unwavering belief that access to financial services is a fundamental right. Her passion for the industry and commitment to financial inclusion have shaped IAMTN’s mission: to build a world where financial access is the norm, not the exception. As she often reflects, “No one told me it was going to be easy”—a sentiment that underscores the resilience and determination behind IAMTN’s success.

From its early days to its current global influence, IAMTN has played a pivotal role in transforming the remittance landscape. The industry has evolved from informal systems like Hawala and early correspondent banking to today’s digital-first platforms powered by fintech innovation. IAMTN has been at the forefront of this transformation, advocating for inclusive policies, supporting digital innovation, and championing initiatives that reduce remittance costs and expand access, particularly for underserved communities and women.

The Power of a Global Network

IAMTN’s strength lies in its diverse and dynamic membership. From fintech disruptors to established financial institutions, its members form a vibrant ecosystem committed to advancing the industry. Their support has been instrumental in IAMTN’s growth and impact.

Equally vital is the role of the Advisory Board, a strategic body that guides IAMTN’s initiatives and ensures alignment with industry needs. This year, IAMTN proudly welcomes a newly elected Advisory Board composed of visionary leaders:

  • Oscar Moreno, Head of Global Business, UniTeller | More PE.

Their collective expertise will be instrumental in shaping IAMTN’s future, driving key initiatives, and unlocking new opportunities in the cross-border payments sector.

A Legacy of Global Impact

Over the years, IAMTN has hosted landmark events in cities across the globe, including the United Kingdom, Singapore, Russia, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Brazil and Morocco, bringing together thought leaders to exchange ideas and forge partnerships. These summits have become essential gatherings for anyone serious about shaping the future of cross-border payments.

As IAMTN celebrates its 20th Anniversary in 2025, it is a moment to reflect on its extraordinary journey and look ahead to the future. The celebration will culminate in the IAMTN Summit 2025, taking place on 8–9 October in Dubai—a city that has long been a hub for innovation and global finance.

This milestone event will not only honour two decades of achievements, but will also serve as a launchpad for the next chapter of collaboration and innovation. It is an invitation to fintech peers, industry leaders, and changemakers to join a global movement that champions financial inclusion, empowers communities, and drives economic growth.
